Super Joe

Ok, so last post was 8 moths ago….I’m due.

I’ll make a long story short, and just say, I lost my job last Friday, and my dad had a heart attack on Saturday. So, basically I have nothing but time, and some excellent motivation to get back to doing what I love to do….run.

So as SWMBO likes to say of me:

“[Today]……I just started running.” - Forest Gump

Started out as a usual first run in a long time run, you can’t really call it a run. I jogged for a minute or two, and then decided my legs were worthless, so I walked. The walkway is always interesting. Nice people & pets, wildlife & nicely landscaped by theĀ  Down To Earth Garden Club. This morning I made my way through a large pack of geese and goslings. The little goslings were sooo cute. The new mamas hissed at me a little bit, but they didn’t charge after me or anything. Well I get about 100 yards away and I hear this guy that was out running, coming through the goose area. And I chuckled because, he was yelling at them to move, or maybe not attack or anything, I’m not sure.

As the gentleman approached me he slowed down and asked me how long I’d been running. I just got a big grin and said, well, I ran 2 marathons in 2007 and haven’t really run since. He replied, “That’s my story!”. Then he went on to explain to me that he prays when he runs, and God had laid it on his heart to have a chat with me, so I picked up the pace as much as I could and we talked for a long while, taking occasinal walk breaks. I’m not going to go into it all, but Joe was a real encouragement to me, and it really was fascinating how coincidental our stories were. I am very thankful that he took a break to talk to me.

I need to make a to-do list for myself, so this is probably as good a place as any. A lot of things I want to get done while I’m not working.

  • Write resume
  • Send resume out
  • get set up again on monster.com and get ready for all the head hunters to call about temporary jobs that don’t pay and are located 2 hours away.
  • tape and finish drywall in Roo’s room.
  • Figure out what to do with back yard.
  • clean garage
  • clean basement
  • pick a mileage buildup run workout and stick to it
  • clean up the diet
  • stop drinking soda, water is delicious
  • get watch fixed

I’ll add more as I think of them.

Season Kickoff

Not really my first run of the year, but it was my first outdoor run of the year. I’ve been helping out with the run committee for JCARC Run/Walk For Someone Special. It’s an annual event in Sykesville that helps raise money for Camp Friendship just outside of Reynoldsville. The camp benefits area retarded children and adults. I’ve attached a scan of the article from The Punxsy Spirit. As you can see the fund raising was very successful this year.

I had a nice run. It was such a beautiful day. I won my age group, as you can also see in the Punxsy Spirit clipping below.

2/3 Triathlete

I haven’t posted much about training or workouts lately. Ok, not at all. But that doesn’t mean I’m just sitting around playing on the computer all day. Ok, for the most part I am. BUT, I have been working out and focusing on getting fit and healthy with zero focus on running, because the former is more important to me right now.

I haven’t been tracking my workouts very well either, mostly because it’s kind of freestyle at the moment. Monday Wednesday and Friday are weights and cardio days. And Tuesdays and Thursdays? Those days are my favorite. I’ve been swimming. I love love love swimming laps. My endurance isn’t up real good right now, but I’m making gains and that feels great. It’s a lot like starting out running, you just do what you can and stick to it, and it gets better and better. My breathing is getting easier, my form is getting better and more relaxed. But best of all, I’m having fun, and it’s variety.

Now I just need a good bike, and I’ll be ready to tackle a triathlon. It is that easy right?

I still run on cardio days. The stinkin dreadmill is just a riot, but I’ve been doing some other things too, like the elliptical and the stair climber.
